Accurately positioning objects.
You can use the arrow keys for fine positioning of object. Simply select the object and hold down an arrow key to slowly move it.

Adapting presentations for re-use.
Powerpoint enables you to create "Custom" presentations based on ones you have previously created. If you need to adapt your presentations for different situations then this can save you considerable time. Create a presentation with all the slides you may need then use it as a basis for the custom presentations. Here an example: Create a presentation with half a dozen slides and save it. In the slide view choose Slide Show, Custom Shows. Type a name for the new show in the dialog that appears then choose the slides (say 1,3 and 5) which you want to use then click Add then Okay and finally Close. To view your new customized presentation choose Slide Show, Custom Shows.

Animating Excel charts.
You can animate individual elements of an imported Excel chart by ungrouping the chart. To do this, select the chart and choose Draw ungroup and then press Ctrl-A to select all the components. You can now right click on individual elements of your chart and choose Custom Animation.

Doing your presentations on the web.
You can use Powerpoint to give presentations over the web. To do so open your presentation and choose presentation conference in from the tools menu. The wizard will guide you through the rest of the operation. All your audience (who could be anywhere in the world) needs is the Powerpoint viewer, available as part of the ValuPack that comes with Office 97 or on Microsofts web site.

Embedding Fonts.
If you are designing your presentation on a computer other than the one which will be used to show the presentation you need to be careful to use fonts which will be on the target computer. The way around this is to embed the fonts you use with in the presentation. Choose File, Save As and click on the 'Embed TrueType' check box. Your fonts are now part of the presentation file.

Expanding your clipart collection.
You can increase the versatility of your clipart significantly by remembering that all clipart if made up of grouped objects. This means that you can delete and alter individual parts of the image and even copy and paste them into other images!

Inverting a text object.
To quickly turn a text object upside-down, and drag one of the top handles downwards until the cursor is below the bottom margin of the object. The text object will now be upside-down and simply drag it for exact positioning.

Multiple copies.
It's easy enough to make multiple copies of an object using Control-C and Control-V but you can also just hold the Control key down while dragging an object. A copy will be placed wherever you release the mouse button.

Preventing PowerPoint returning to Edit mode at the end of your presentation.
On the Tools menu, select Options then tick 'End with Black Slide'. This option is global and will affect all you presentations.

Recycling slides.
Powerpoint allows you to make use of slides more than once. To do so, open the presentation you are currently working on and move to the point where you want to insert a slide. Choose "Select slides from files" from the insert menu. Click Browse and select the presentation you want to extract the slides from. Click display and the slides in the presentation will be displayed. To add an individual slide to your new presentation, select the slide you require and click the Insert button. Click Insert All to use all of the slides.

Reducing file sizes
PowerPoint presentations can get very large if you use a lot of images and objects. To reduce the size, place a blank slide at the beginning of your presentation. PowerPoint will use this slide as the preview image in the Open file dialog box and, because the image is blank, the overall size of the file will be reduced.

Running your presentation without first loading PowerPoint.
First, create a shortcut to you presentation on the Desktop. To do this, use explorer to navigate to the folder where you store you presentations, right click and hold on the presentation file and drag it to the Desktop. Release the right button and select 'Create Shortcut(s) Here' from the pop-up menu. Now you can show your presentation by right clicking on the shortcut and selecting 'Show'.

Shaping a text box.
PowerPoint enables you to alter the shape of a text box already embedded in your presentation by selecting the text box and choosing Draw/Change Shape from the drawing toolbar. Select the category and shape you want and click Apply.

Slide highlighting.
In the days of OHP's it was common to use a marker to highlight items on our transparency as you gave your presentation. A similar effect is available in PowerPoint. To do this, run a presentation in manual mode. With a slide displayed, press Ctrl-P and a pen cursor appears. You can then use the pen to highlight objects in your slide. To change the pens colour, right click and select Pointer Options.

Spell checking and OLE.
PowerPoint cannot spell check words within OLE objects. To ensure there are no spelling errors in your presentation, check all spelling in the source application.

Text: Making your text appear like a typewriter.
Create a text box on a blank slide and type in a sentence. Now right-click the text and choose Custom Animation. A dialog box appears, click Effect. Click the arrow to the right os the Effects entry box and choose Wipe Left from the selection list. Next click the arrow to the right of the Sounds entry box and choose Typewriter. Click the arrow at the right side of the Introduce Text entry box and choose By Letter. Now click the Timing tab and select the radio button labeled Animate. Next select the Automatically radio button and set the spin box to 0 seconds. Click OK to save your selections and close the dialog box. When you view your slide, the text appears as if it's being typed on a typewriter, complete with the sounds!

Microsoft offices ValuPack include several useful tools for Powerpoint. For example be \AMOVIE folder contains tools to play all of the popular media formats including MPEG, AVI, Quicktime etc.

Using you presentation narration on the web.
By using RealAudio you can convert your presentation narration to make it suitable for down loading over the web. You'll find RealAudio in the ValuPack which comes as part of Office 97.
